At the Paris Music Institute, we fully understand adults who would like to learn to play the cello but feel anxious about getting started.
Cello enthusiasts with no musical training or previous experience often doubt their ability to play. They combine this fear with all sorts of unfounded beliefs and questions such as ‘Am I too old to start?’, ‘I don’t think I have any musical talent’ or ‘What if I am really bad and look ridiculous?’.
The first thing we would like to tell you is: Do not worry!
You don’t need to worry, for the following reasons:
1. Whatever your age, there is no age limit for starting to play the cello for pleasure. You are not planning to change direction, leave your job and become a cellist, are you?
2. Once again, exceptional talent is not necessary to enjoy playing the cello. It is certainly useful for those wishing to pursue a career, but it is not even necessary when playing for pleasure.
3. It’s understandable to be afraid that you will not be any good. That’s normal for any adult, but it is impossible to look ridiculous at the Paris Music Institute.
We have a genuine passion for helping adults get started, and we can assure you that we will never judge you. We will never think negatively of you. On the contrary, we will always support you and guide you in a way that ensures you’re at ease.

As the session lasts 30 minutes, you will have plenty of time to discover the instrument, meet your delightful teacher and realise that you are perfectly capable of doing what your teacher asks of you.
During this first lesson, your teacher will ensure you’re at ease and show you the essential basics.
After this first meeting, you will have a better idea of what is involved, and your fears should disappear.
There is no mystery to playing the cello. It is a skill like any other that must be studied and developed over time, so the only way to succeed is to take the first step and get started.
